Journal of an Average High School Runner
Entry #124

i cant remember if i told you guys this but my dad moved and now he lives a little over a mile from my school. so today i was able to come home after school and change into my running cloths in m own house. it was really nice.

for my workout i did a warm up “jog” back to school (it was at about 6:30 pace because tyler was waiting at school for me so i felt like i needed to hurry, even though i really didnt). then because he is running inn the met of champions on wednesday i asked him what he wanted to do and he didnt really know, so i suggested a little warm up and then some repeats. so we did. this warm up was a little slower, but not much probably about 7 minute ace for about 10 minutes. then we came back, and he wanted to do 2x400 at goal 800 pace. and obviously i cant keep up with him nor do i run the 800, so i did 4x400 at mile pace. tyler did his first 400, then when he finished i took off on m first. the goal as usual is 1:10 pace, but as usual i was fast running 1:09 for the first one. then as before tyler did his 400 and i followed after he was done. this time i was actually faster and ran a 1:08. tyler was done, but i kept going, m third 400 was in 1:08, at this point i didnt feel all that bad, but i was huffing and puffing quite a bit. i have lost quite a bit of m aerobic base. m fourth and final 400 was again in 1:08, however this time is was in a lot of pain, my legs were dying so much so that i thought i was going to come through in 1:15 or something ridiculous. but i guess i was able to push through and make m split. then for a cool down i ran back home, m return trip was much much slower.

easy long run today; 3 out and 3 back. felt good wasnt looking fro a certain time or anything, just nice and easy pace. when i cam back to the track i did a coupe strides, but i was tired, long weekend, so i didnt do that many.

spent all of yesterday at the state meet, i didnt compete but i cheered on my team to 2 golds several silvers and a couple bronzes. it was super exciting to watch my teammate just barely win the 110 hurdles, and our girls 4x100 team won without much competition, i think they one by at least a second, maybe even 2. i saw some other crazy races, a girl won the 800 in 2:13, that is so fast for a girl, i can barely run 2:09. then another kid, who had already won the mile and 800, opened the 3200 in 4:40 and closed in 4:28. tats freaking ridiculous, i wouldnt even be able to keep up with him if we was running a 3200 and i was just running 1600. all in all it was a lot of fun, i like being a spectator for once.

Went for a run today after school. my original plan was to do 30 to 40 minutes easy and then do 2x800 after the run. however i ended up doing 40 minute run, about 5.5 miles, and hen i did 4x400 instead, i need to work my way back into speed. the run felt pretty good, i went out a little fast, but i slowed in the middle so i could have a strong finish. then after the run i took a 15 minute break were i jogged a lap did some drills and changed my shoes. i did the 400’s in my xc racing flats which is really unusual for me because i am pretty old school and think its best to train in heavier shoes, but i needed a self-esteem boost. my first 400 was alright, i didnt really have a time in mind, i just figured somewhere around 1:10 like i usually do, however my first one ended up 1:15. not too bad, i took it kind of easy, i probably sounds like i havnet ran in years, but i could really remember 1:10 pace. i took a minute break after the first 400 and then went off on my next. this time i did a lot better running a 1:10, it felt really good, had a nic last 200 finishing with 34. after this one i walk/jogged a lap super slow and then when i got back i took another minute break. then i was off on my third 400, this time i came through in 1:08 which is what i usually do so thats good. before starting the last one i took another minute break. i felt really good during the last 400, i came through the 200 in 33, ahead of pace, and was able to close in a 32 for a 1:05 lap. the best part was that after a 5.5 mile run at a decent pace, and 4x400 at decent pace i still felt good. i dont think i could have done another 1:05, but definitely a 1:08 or 1:10.

the success of the workout today along with the fact that i think i can go 4:40, i am going to be competing in two USATF meets coming up in june. i plan to run the 1500 and maybe the 2000k steeple at the first one and for sure will run the 1500 and 3000 and maybe run the 2000 steeple again depending on how i do the first time. if anything it will just be a fun experience, i remember running these meets my freshman year, yes i know oh so long ago, and it was a lot of fun to just get out there and not have to worry about qualifying for anything. its just about getting a good time and having a good time.

I did not run yesterday because i went to the state met to watch my teammates compete. however after only 4 events they shut down th meet for the day due to excessive wind, rain, and lightning. so sadly my teammates wont have any prelims for the rest of the events they are just redoing all the heats and making the second part of the state meet, on saturday, finals only. but i think we will still do pretty good. we have a few chances of making the podium and maybe even winning.

we…i guess i should say they had practice today and i tagged along. i was going to run with tyler who is going to state for the 800 and the 4x400 but he did a workout with the sprinters so i hung out with our pole vaulter. he taught me how to vault, im not very good, but it was pretty fun. pole vaulting is a lot harder than it looks, a lot more technique than i had figured. after vaulting i was feeling a little guilty that i didnt run so i decided to do a 400. i havent gone fast since the district meet, and have only ran 3 times since then so i didnt really know what to expect. i ended up running a 63 which is pretty good for m, i guess i underestimated myself.

Will you be going to state this year?

sorry i didnt see this before, no i did not make it sadly, was 5 seconds off in the 1600 and about 6 in the 4x800 :( but I will be there on saturday cheering on my team, there are a couple races were we have a chance of getting on the podium and maybe even winning!

Good Luck tomorrow!

Found out yesterday after school that i did not qualify for state in the 4x800. i wouldnt say i was devastated, but i was kind of in a daze after that. like my running career is basically over, i will never run another high school met. even today its hard to think about…anyway i didnt run yesterday because i didnt know if i should go to practice. so instead i stood in our schools parking lot for an hour and a half talking to a friend who was also on track. both of us were confused not knowing what to do, for the past 4 years of my life i have ran in preparing for state, and now what do i run for…

did end up going to practice today, yesterday i did not know that our girls 4x800 had made state so i didtn want to go to practice and be the only distance kid. but they did make it so i went and hung with them. they always screw around at practice, so i went along with it for like the first time ever. it was actually kind of nice to go to practice and not have the pressure of a race coming up.

all we did was an 8 minute super slow jog around the campus. then we came back and i did 4 strides in the grass just for th hell of it.

tomorrow is the first day of the state meet and i am going to support my team and to also film for my broadcast class. i have never gone to watch before, so it should be fun.

I am still in a limbo…dont know if i need to be training or running just because…well you know…running is great…

so i did go for a little run today, did 25 minutes around my neighborhood, which is now verrado because i moved last weekend. wooo. anyway i did the run at a nice and easy pace, nothing to hard just something to get my legs moving.

dont really know what to do with my self now…uh i dont know if im season is done or if i will be running in the state meet on wednesday, so i suppose i should keep running. not that i would just stop running because track is over, but i would probably take a couple days off…or maybe just a day…

anyway i went for a 7 mile bike ride today, went on the trail behind my school, and i would just like to say it is much easier to run this than to bike it, and its a pretty level trail. its more like a dirt road than a trail. thats really it, i think im going to get up at a reasonable hour tomorrow and go for a nice run, maybe like 4 or 5 miles. we shall see.

Had the district championship meet today, there were 3 other schools from our district plus one other district which had 3 schools and then two other schools brought a couple kids to try and qualify. so needless to say it was a pretty big meet, much larger than i had expected. Per-usual i ran the 1600 and the 3200.

in the 1600  was ranked number 1 in our district and numeber 3 in the race, they combined all the schools even though our coaches for the last week had been telling us we were running seperate races. so going into the race i was a little nervous, like the pressure was on. not only did i need to win so our team would get the points, but i also wanted to lower my time. so the gun sounded and everyone sprinted off the line as usual. becasue i know what always happens i just sat backed and watched them all die. i went through the firt 200 in 34 and i was probably in 15th place. by the time i crossed the first 400 i had only moved up to 12 place and i went through in 71. i continued to sit back and wait, but due to their slowing down i would occasionally pick some people off. as i came into the home stretch of the second lap i moved up to right behind the lead pack of 5. i came through the 800 in 2:24, a little slow but it thats fine. as i came out of the curve and entered the back straight i surged and darted to the front. it was exhilarating! so i moved to the front and was able to hold them off. i came thrugh 1200 in 4:34. i continued to lead all the way though 1400 meters. as i cam to the last curve i started my kick, as i came out of the curve i kind of looked to my sides and saw i was alone and thought i was all good. but then from behind me i hear jack scream “their coming!” and then two kids move up, one n each sholder. so i sprint as hard as i can and i kind of dive forard at the line like the sprinters. one of the guys beat me, but i was able to edge out the other. the good thing is that the guy that edged me out was from the other district so it didnt matter. I had won the district mile! the time between the three of us and jack who was, unknowingly, right behind us is incredible. the first place kid ran 4:45.16, then me in 4:45.40, followed by a 4:45.50 and jack back in fourth ran 4:45.80. so as you can see it was a pretty intense finish. not only did i win districts, but i set a meet record b 00:00.10 seconds and also PR’d which means i also broke the school record!!

the 3200 was a lot less eventful. i came into the race ranked 5th and jack was ranked 2nd. the race started and as usual everyone went out fast, i ws back in like 10th and came through in 77 seconds. however this pace was kept up by the leaders becasue i came through the mile in 5:09, thats freaking crazy for me. but thats pretty much where it ended. at the mile i was back ff the pack in 4th place however at the mile one of the kids dropped back hard and i was able to catch him and pass him. so i was able to manage third place and jack petered out and got second. my time was pretty bad considering my first mile, i went 10:50.

So now that i got that out of the way here is the great news. so our district hands out three trophys; a boys overall, a girls overall, and a combined winner which adds up the boys and girls to see who the best overall track team is. for the past 2 years our girls track team has won the girls title, but due to our crappy boys team we never got the combined trophy. following in suit the girls again won the overall trophy, i didnt see their score but im pretty srue it was a blow out. if you can recall on tuesday we were marked to get third place losing by like 3 points, but as of last night we were slated for first winning by 2 points. so it was going to be a close one, and we were going to need to be perfect. AND thaats just what we did! before the twomile we were in first place, up by 7 points, and then right before the gun our coach notified us that the throwers ahd got 8 points and the second place school did get any. so basically we had it in the bag. but thats no reason to run bad. so jack and i ran hard, and then our 4x400 team was able to beat out the second place school in the last 100. to sum this all up WE WON!! our boys team not only won, but we just out it to the other schools, we did so good it was freaking awsome.

so in summation, i won the district mile in a PR/School record of 4:45.40, got third in the 3200 in 10:50 and the boys and girls teams bth one meaning we also won the Combined trophy!! Today was a good day!!!

uh getting kind of annoyed of posting on days like these but im trying to keep an accurate log. just an easy day today, only did 16 minute run followed by 6 strides in the grass.

we had another meeting after practice, nothing new really, some people from the other schools got moved around in their events and some how we are now picked to win by 2 points. so as long as we all do what we are suppose to do we should come out on top.
